Drummer Bobby Sanabria, My Old Drum Teacher

Robbie Rodriguez - Drummer for Criminal

I recently attended an Open Mic Night in Fredericksburg, VA were I was united with my old band mates. It's been about 2 years since I've been behind a kit. I was recently asked about my drumming and why I haven't played. This question was asked as I returned back to my seat as I concluded a brief demonstration of my drumming that night.  For one, I was astonished to hear a compliment about my playing; it's been so many years since I've played in a serious project!

It was nice to hear someone appreciated my playing, but its always a struggle in my mind to figure if I have what it takes to raise that flag once again. Since starting RockRadio993, I've had the opportunity to hang with some great drummers. Many have inspired me to play again. Our area is rich with some great and accomplished drummers which will be surely included in future blogs. We have some great local groups with great drumming talent; I'd like to showcase them on my radio show and live! At this particular point in time, I'd like to introduce you to someone who I really respect.

Mr. Bobby Sanabria was my drum instructor many years ago. He helped to instill great values and provided me with great skills to pay it forward. I wanted to showcase him here; I will soon embark on a possible tour and kick off my drumming in full force as a friend has now become signed to a label and asked for my drumming support. So I get ready to gear up to support a newly formed touring project.

Bobby Sanabria:

Bobby Sanabria - drummer, percussionist, composer, arranger, recording artist, producer, filmmaker, conductor, educator, multi-cultural warrior and multiple Grammy nominee – has performed with a veritable Who's Who in the world of jazz and Latin music, as well as with his own critically acclaimed ensembles. His diverse recording and performing experience includes work with such legendary figures as Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Paquito D'Rivera, Charles McPherson, Mongo SantamarĂa, Ray Barretto, Marco Rizo, Arturo Sandoval, Roswell Rudd, Chico O'Farrill, Candido, Yomo Toro, Francisco Aguabella, Larry Harlow, Henry Threadgill, and the Godfather of Afro-Cuban Jazz, Mario BauzĂ¡.
Bobby, the son of Puerto Rican parents, was born and raised in the "Fort Apache" section of New York City's South Bronx. Inspired and encouraged by maestro Tito Puente, another fellow New York-born Puerto Rican, Bobby "got serious" and attended Boston's Berklee College of Music from 1975 to 1979, obtaining a Bachelor of Music degree and receiving their prestigious Faculty Association Award for his work as an instrumentalist. Since his graduation, Bobby has become a leader in the Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and jazz fields as both a drummer and percussionist, and is recognized as one of the most articulate musician-scholars of la tradiciĂ³n living today.

He has been featured on numerous Grammy-nominated albums, including The Mambo Kings and other movie soundtracks, as well as numerous television and radio work. Mr. Sanabria was the drummer with the legendary “Father of the Afro-Cuban Jazz movement,” Mario BauzĂ¡’s Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra. With them he recorded three CD’s (two of which were Grammy-nominated) which are considered to be definitive works of the Afro-Cuban big-band jazz tradition. Mr. Sanabria was also featured with the orchestra in two PBS documentaries about BauzĂ¡ and also appeared on the Bill Cosby show performing with the orchestra. He also appeared and performed prominently in a PBS documentary on the life of Mongo Santamaria and on camera in the CBS television movie, Rivkin: Bounty Hunter.

In 1993 Bobby and his octet AscensiĂ³n released ¡NYC AchĂ©! on Flying Fish Records (now available on Rounder Records). It received worldwide acclaim and garnered four and half stars in Down Beat magazine, as well as receiving a nomination for Best Record of the Year by the National Association of Independent Record Distributors (NAIRD). In June 2000 Bobby released Afro-Cuban Dream... Live & In Clave!!! on the Arabesque label. Recorded live at Birdland in New York City, it features Bobby powering a big band of twenty all-stars. Critically acclaimed worldwide, it has been hailed by both the jazz and Latin music cognoscenti as a masterpiece, and was nominated for a mainstream Grammy as the Best Latin Jazz Album of 2001. Afro-Cuban Dream...Live & In Clave!!! was also nominated for the Jazz Journalists Association 2001 Award for the Best Afro-Cuban Jazz Album of the Year.

His next recording, ¡Quarteto AchĂ©!, released in 2002, on the ZOHO label, documented Bobby's virtuosity in a small group setting and was hailed a "classic" by Modern Drummer magazine and critically acclaimed by the New York Times. It was also nominated for Best Latin Jazz recording of 2003 by the Jazz Journalists Association. He also received a second Grammy nomination in 2003 for, 50 Years of Mambo - A Tribute to Damaso Perez Prado.

Bobby and his Quarteto AchĂ© toured Armenia in June of 2007 being personally invited by the U.S. Embassy to represent the United States in a a series of concerts. Headlining in the final event, The Cascade Jazz festival in Yerevan, Armenia’s capitol, the group received a thunderous ovation from the estimated 8,000 person audience which was broadcast throughout the country. In a pre-concert press conference when asked what jazz represented, Bobby simply stated, “Freedom.“ His group has the unique distinction and honor of being the first ensemble ever to perform Latino oriented jazz in this country and spread clave consciousness in a unique master class that he held at the Yerevan Conservetory. If this weren’t enough, the ensemble performed a private concert for Armenia’s Heads of State, and President Robert Khachaturian who stated that, “I simply love jazz! Its spirit of improvisation in a collective democracy is the inspiration for my vision for Armenia.”

Bobby’s latest recording project, Big Band Urban Folktales, on the Jazzheads label, was nominated for a mainstream Grammy in 2008 for best Latin Jazz recording. It is proving to be his most lauded work and has been garnering critical acclaim for its futuristic approach to the Latin jazz big band canon. Big Band Urban Folktales also has recently won the 2008 Jazz Journalists Award for Best Latin Jazz Recording of 2008.

"...(Mr. Sanabria) expands the possibilities, moving the sound of bands like that of (Puente, Machito), with all the heft and intricacy and clave-based dance rhythm, into the harmonically oriented sophistication of current New York jazz players. It’s New York up and down, and back and forth across the last century, from the street to the mambo palaces to the conservatories."
- Ben Ratliff, The NY Times

Also out is the DVD of Bobby and his nonet AscensiĂ³n’s scorching appearance at the 2006 Modern Drummer Festival currently released by Hudson Music and the new release of the CD, El Espiritu Jibaro, a collaboration between legendary trombonist Roswell
Rudd, Puerto Rican cuatro virtuoso Yomo Toro and Bobby with his nonet AscensiĂ³n is available on the Sunnyside label. Also forthcoming (November 2008), the release on DVD “FROM MAMBO TO HIP HOP” – A South Bronx Tale, produced by City Lore, on which Bobby was an Assistant Producer and which broadcast on PBS in 2006 and won the 2007 ALMA Award for Best Television Documentary.

Mr. Sanabria has been the recipient of many awards, including an NEA grant as a jazz performer, various Meet the Composer awards, the INTAR Off-Broadway Composer award, and the Mid-Atlantic Foundation Arts Connect Grant three times. In 2003 he was presented with an "Outstanding Achievement Award" by Ivan Acosta of Latin Jazz USA, in recognition of Bobby's extraordinary creative contribution to Latin jazz. Mr. Sanabria has recently been awarded the 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award by KOSA for his outstanding accomplishments in jazz and Latin music both as a performer and educator and the 2008 Martin Luther King Jr. Mentor Award presented to him by the Manhattan Country School for his work in the world of jazz.

Mr. Sanabria co-produced the nationally broadcast documentary, THE PALLADIUM - Where Mambo Was King,” for the BRAVO network which received the award for Best Documentary for a Cable TV in 2003. Mr. Sanabria was a consultant in the Smithsonian’s historic four year traveling exhibit, Latin Jazz: La CombinaciĂ³n Perfecta and also featured in two of the exhibits short films.
Mr. Sanabria was voted “Percussionist of the Year" for 2005 by the readers of DRUM! Magazine, a worldwide publication devoted to drums and percussion. His three part video instructional series, “Getting Started on Congas,” originally released by DCI way back in 1995, now available through Alfred Music, set an industry standard by which all other instructional percussion videos must be judged by.

Mike Bailey, VP at Potomac Records

Recently I sat down with Mike Bailey, Vice President and Artist Relations of Potomac Records.
Mr. Bailey calls his record label Potomac Records because, “Potomac references the Washington DC area (Potomac River), it’s the city I was born (DC) and where Pete (Evick, President) and I were raised (northern Virginia). A business name should always clearly define either the products or services you sell/produce, Potomac Records fits perfect for where we’ve been and what our business represents.”

He started this record company because, “Together, and in separate bands, Pete (Evick, Bret Michaels Band) and I were part of the local VA/DC music scene since 16 years old and have seen so many great VA/MD/DC bands over the years. As both of us continue to perform in various bands (Pete – Bret Michaels Band – EVICK – DOWNTIME / Mike – INTO the Now – DOWNTIME), we have a true passion for the music business, attempting to apply our experience, and the relationships we’ve developed the past 20 years, to put Potomac Records and our artists on the map. To pioneer a new model Record Label into the new digital world we live in.”

Potomac Records is applying a different concept to finding new artists’ than the typical Major Label practice. We’re not a Death Metal only label, or an exclusive R&B/Hip Hop label. Regardless of genre, we want to work with artists that have the passion, the willingness to work hard to achieve their goals, and understand it’s not just what you do on the stage; it’s what you do off the stage that can make the difference in your career.”

How they present their artists has changed from the standard format as well. Mr. Bailey says, “The “Go Green! Go Digital!” business model originated from our true belief that the music industry is not the same as it was 10 years ago. The internet really did change everything, as it did for Journalists (bloggers), and Radio personalities (internet radio). Technology is so much more sophisticated the way people are informed and receive new music. It’s getting the message across that if you purchase digital media online it actually pays the artist for their work. Nowadays, in any city or town the band performs, if they market their music effectively, fans can download on the spot on their phone, iPad, or computer. Also available for Potomac artists’, Custom printed USB drives that include the release (mp3), artist info and artwork (pdf). The custom USBs have been a huge hit, replacing CD sales at live performances. Our artists’ music is available at 101 digital media outlets in 232 countries”

I asked Mr. Bailey what his take on various “variety shows” were for finding new music. His response was, “. American Idol, yes. America’s Got Talent, not as interested but can be humorous at times, The X-Factor, I’m a Simon Cowell fan. There’s something super cool about the guy, he’s very successful, and started at the bottom. I can appreciate that. I’ll always be an advocate of people fulfilling their dreams, even if it’s short lived on shows such as these.”

Mr. Bailey is not limiting himself to any particular genre, but states...“it’s seeing something very special out of an artist that makes you want to be a fan. Nothing is more exciting than to pop in to a local venue / bar and be completely blown away. The Washington DC / northern Virginia local music scene has some amazing artists, of all genres. We’re not cherry picking bands from all over the country. Our focus is local VA/DC/MD talent.

Mr. Bailey adds: “If a VA/DC/MD area unsigned band is out there doing it, there’s a good chance we’ll hear about it from someone.”

The people working with his company “ Potomac Records has a small solid foundation of experienced musicians, engineers, graphics artists, and business entreprenuers that work extremely well together, and have collaborated in one way or another over the past 20 years. With any small business, we all wear multiple hats but also look forward to solid growth over the next 2 years.”

They don't limit their performers, saying” We have an agreement for each artist, and do not limit any members to participate in other projects. For example, the drummer from Driven Livid, Jeff Mortimer, is now the drummer with the Jason Dean Band, which both are Potomac Records artists.”

When asked why people choose what they listen to and why, Mr. Bailey replied, “ There are so many variations to the influence of the type of music people listen to. A few years ago Walmart bought 3 million copies of the AC/DC “Black Ice” CD, which made it go GOLD (3X) before it was even released. Walmart also had all the AC/DC merchandise to go with the release. A great deal for AC/DC. A year or so later Iron Man 2 came out, with Shoot To Thrill (AC/DC - Back in Black) as the title track for the movie. A band from the late 70’s now became popular again, to a whole new generation of fans, all due to the financial push from major corporations like Walmart.”

The biggest challenge is doing something different, and hoping it catches on. Instead of buying the available options at Best Buy or Walmart on CD, you can purchase music instantly online, or buy the artist’ custom USB drive, or the artist gift card with a special code to download online.

Mr. Bailey says, “I’m influenced by successful business owners and those who follow what’s in their heart. Sammy Hagar is the perfect example of having a deep passion and dedication for music, having a very successful career at it, but an even more successful career as a businessman. His book RED is a great read for musicians.”

Mr. Bailey says to hook up with them go to their “Facebook Group page that allows the artists on the label to post updated information to all Group members. Social media outlets play such a big role in communicating with fans. The Potomac Records website has information listed for each artist, including a clip of the artist single, and link to download/purchase on iTunes. Go to www.PotomacRecords.com, LIKE us on Facebook as well.”
